Famagusta is one of the most important, greatly fortified ports on the shores of the Mediterranean.
By the year 1300 A.D. the town was one of the principal markets of the Eastern Mediterranean, the rendezvous place of rich merchants and the headquarters of many Christian religious orders as revealed by numerous churches of various denominations still to be seen in the town today. Lusignan dynasty ruled Cyprus and fortified the town, and in the thirteenth century built the beautiful Cathedral of St. Nicholas, transformed since then into a mosque.
The city is protected by ramparts which encircle the town and the citadel castle guarding the harbour, the best in Cyprus. This citadel or Othello's tower is the first main focus of attention for visitors.

To the north of Famagusta lie the fabulous ruins of Salamis.  The spectacular ruins give a fascinating insight into long-lost civilizations and include a magnificent amphitheatre, Roman baths, a gymnasium and royal tombs.  Just inland from Famagusta are the church and monastery dedicated to St. Barnabas. There is a wonderful collection of 18th century icons and the monastery cloisters now houses an archaeological museum.

Famagusta of today is a vibrant youthful university city. This buzz is evident  in the city that offers comfortable and relaxing destination for switching off, enjoying the history and sights.
The city boasts numerous cafés, restaurants, bars, clubs and casinos catering for all tastes. While delicious Cypriot cuisine is a must, a sumptuous Mediterranean meal is rounded with a good cup of Turkish coffee.
