| Nicosia, (CNA) -- The proposals of the Greek Cypriot side for improvements in the UN Secretary General's plan for a Cyprus settlement do not aim at changing the framework, the philosophy and the parameters of the plan nor at depriving the rights and privileges the plan offers to the Turkish Cypriots, Greek Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos stated in Cyprus today. Opening the International Conference on ''The Changing Nature of the Ombudsman Institution in Europe'' organised by the office of the Cyprus Commissioner for Administration (ombudsman), Papadopoulos said ''we hope and anticipate, through negotiations, which we are seeking and pursuing, without terms and preconditions to achieve improvements that will make the Cyprus settlement more functional and thus more viable. A solution with endurance, within the framework of the great European family.'' He added that the substance of the Cyprus problem lies with the implementation of human rights and fundamental freedoms for all the citizens of the state, with equality and no discriminations. Referring to the Conference, Papadopoulos said the Cyprus Ombudswoman Eliana Nicolaou's initiative to organise this conference was ''praiseworthy and very important''. Papadopoulos stressed that the protection and promotion of human rights, the virtuous administration and combating symptoms of bad administration consist a priority for the Cyprus government. |
